Kool Aid Stains – Getting Them Out
 by: Steve Gillman

It’s not always possible to remove kool aid stains from carpet. All “red stains” are difficult to get out. Red coloring used in pop, candy, and other foods generally doesn’t flush out with water. However, if you try the methods used by professional carpet cleaners, you may get that stain out.

First, use a shop-vac to suck some of the kool aid out, if you can get to the stain quickly. This can stop the spill from entering the carpet fibers. Getting out some or all of the remaining stain takes time.

Start with Dawn dishwashing detergent – the original blue type. Add five or six drops to two cups of warm water. Dampen a white cotton cloth with this solution and lay it over the stain. Then place a clothes iron on top of it, set on “low”.

Let this sit for fifteen minutes, and don’t press down. The red stain will start to wick up into the cloth. You should see red on the cloth. Fold it to use a clean part or apply a new cloth, and repeat the process.

It takes patience to get red stains out of carpet, but even year-old Kool Aid stains have been removed using this method. Repeat the process again and again until there is no more transfer of the red stain to the cloth. Rinse the spot with water, blot it up, and dry it quickly. Quick drying prevents any stain deeper down from wicking up to the surface.

To summarize: use clean white cotton cloth (several), low heat, and don’t press or rub. Let the color wick up into the cloth at its own rate, then rinse and dry the area quickly. You can, at the very least, lighten Kool Aid stains and other red stains in carpet using this technique.

Cleaning your carpets is probably not something you do every day, but it is still necessary at some point for most people, especially if you have children or pets. Before you go out and purchase a machine to help you get it done, consider just renting one.

Equipment rentals can not only save you money, but also save you from having to find room in your house for a carpet cleaner that you’ll likely hardly use. If you know little about the idea of renting cleaning products, get some tips before you start.

Rather than buying brand new cleaners or hiring expensive companies to do the job, most equipment rentals will cut it. In fact, many machines that you can rent are similar to those that professionals use, such as high quality steam cleaners.

Before you rent anything, pick a local company near you that offers the best quality cleaning products at the lowest price. Also, pay attention to how long you can keep it. Some rental companies loan out their machines for days, while others do so for only a few hours.

Keep room in your budget for the shampoo or detergent you will usually need to buy to put into the machine. Some equipment rentals might come with the necessary solution for an added price, while others require you to furnish your own.

Keep in mind that some carpet cleaners have proprietary solutions, in which case only one particular cleaning solution will work. However, most cleaners work well with any of the solutions on the market. Before you get started freshening up your carpet, be sure to first vacuum it so it is free of loose debris.

Then, you can fill the cleaner with the proper solution. Always pay attention to the directions, if you have them.

If your rental does not come with instructions, you can usually find them on the Internet by looking up the website of the manufacturer. They might also offer tips when it comes to getting out stains from the carpet with the equipment you rented.

While not every stain is sure to come out with a good cleaning, most will. Using equipment rentals can help increase your chances of getting out stains that might have taken you days of scrubbing and blotting.

Remember that the more professional-grade your rental is, the easier the task is likely to be, so find a good company that is known for renting out quality carpet cleaners.

What is the “average” cost of pro-carpet cleaning?

I was thinking of renting one of those Rug Doctors, but I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about it….and even though it may be cheaper than hiring a pro, I think that I should at least consider the pro.

I know that prices can vary greatly from place to place, state to state..you get the idea but I'm curious to know how much *you yourself* has paid for the service. Don't forget to mention how big your house is/square footage, etc. I'm just weighing my options.
